Partnership in Action: The Mara Elephant Project

The Mara Elephant Project is working to positively effect the human-elephant relationship in the Mara-Serengeti ecosystem while setting up an anti-poaching strategy to save African elephants.  The demand for ivory, particularly in Asia, poses a real and growing threat to elephants across Africa.

The Mara Elephant Project brings together researchers and conservationists in an effort to help secure the future of African elephants. The project’s plan is comprised of tracking elephants to better understand their movements and activating a Rapid Response Unit to quickly respond to conflict situations and poaching alerts. The Mara Elephant Project also engages the Mara community by teaching human-elephant conflict resolution methods and anti-poaching education – helping locals learn to live along side the elephant. When people work together, they can protect the irreplaceable biodiversity of the planet and have a far greater impact than any one of us can have alone.

We will lose the African elephant if we do not stop the poaching for ivory.

In my opinion, not only does the insatiable appetite for ivory have to be curtailed, but also poverty. It is my understanding that the poachers are often victims of severe poverty. If they weren’t so poor perhaps they would be much less likely to murder these magnficent animals.
